1965 BUICK RIVIERA
A highly original Riv from the best year, in the best colour.
Just arrived and under preparation.
History of this car
Not our usual stock but we couldn’t resist this super cool Riviera. Unusually for this model, which is a favourite of the customising community, it is in very original, ungot at condition, and cherry bomb exhausts aside, is a standard vehicle.
This stunning Riv, fitted with the Wildcat 445 engine, is finished in Turquoise Mist over a white vinyl interior with black carpets and is equipped with factory options including chrome wheels with painted inserts, white wall tyres, tilt steering wheel, power tinted windows, air conditioning and cruise control.
Our Riv is an ex California car, imported into the UK in 2011. Being a 1965 model, it is the only year with the hidden headlights, concealed behind electrically operated ribbed clamshell covers. This feature was designer Bill Mitchell’s original idea for the concept car, dropped for production reasons on later versions.
Our car is showing a recorded 52,000 miles which is possibly the genuine mileage from new, judging by the limited wear to the interior. We are still researching the history, but we believe it had only one owner for 30 years and is a matching numbers car.
It is of course all taxes paid and is UK registered with an age related number.
This makes an excellent first impression with laser straight sides and factory panel fitment. Opening panels shut with a quality thunk and gaps are all correct.
Our Riv wears an older at least partial repaint in the original turquoise colour, in our opinion the best colour for the model. The paint is nice and thin, and the paint to the roof could be the original factory finish. There are some age related blemishes but this is a very solid, rust free car including the chassis, which has been waxoil treated with additional cavity injection.
The glass is all excellent, the oft damaged or missing finishing edge trims are in crisp excellent condition. The chrome is also good and damage free.
Our Riv starts eagerly with a delicious burble from it’s “nailhead” 6.6litre motor. It has recently had overhauls to the fuel, braking and cooling systems, the tyres are excellent and the engine oil and filter are new.
The engine seems in fine fettle, the automatic gearbox changes smoothly and our car is fitted with a limited slip differential. With a top speed when new of 120mph and 0-60 time of around 8 seconds, the Riviera is faster and more agile than most American cars of the period.
Our car has had the electric motor upgrade for the headlight clamshells.
Advisory free MOT expiring January 2020.
This is in very nice unrestored condition, with a good patina. Some wear to the headlining is the only real fault.
The seats are very comfortable and the original black carpets in good order, with protective Riviera overmats in place. Factory seat belts fitted. A nice touch are the original keys and fob.
Good clean condition, jacking kit and spare wheel with cover are all in place.
The ’65 Riviera is on the move in the US, with some examples at auction selling for $120,000. This is a rare opportunity to add this very cool car to your collection, and with only 6 others in the UK, you won’t see another one cruising anytime soon.
