1971 CITROËN SM
The best! A stunning carburettor SM with leather, SS valves and exhaust, XWXs in a rare and cool factory colour presented in fabulous condition.
History of this car
Our SM was registered new to France on 08/07/1971 and stayed in the dry south west until imported by us in 2015 . The enthusiast we bought it from told us he was the second owner from new, having purchased it from the original owner’s family in 2012.
This was our personal SM and a beautiful unrestored car. We sold it to the current Citroen collector owner in 2016. In addition to diligent regular maintenance, he has carried out a thorough programme of detail cosmetic enhancements to improve an already excellent car, including repainting, polishing or rechroming bumpers, door handles, badges, repainting wheels , fitting some NOS hardware and so on. This has taken the car to the next level and today it is genuinely in A1 condition in every respect; we hesitate to use the word concours, but we think it is the best example you’re ever likely to see, and is suitable for a buyer seeking the exceptional.
Mileage recorded today is 61000 klms or 38,000 miles which we believe is the genuine mileage from new.
This car has the “wow” factor. The body has perfect panel fit and this SM is finished in brun roquebrune, a copper/orange hue which changes in different lights. The paint has a thin highly polished finish and is probably better than when the car was new.
The chassis is in A1 condition, with factory undercoating throughout, and areas such as the vulnerable front valance are without damage. All chrome and stainless trim has been expensively machine polished or rechromed (£4000), again these present as new; the glass enclosed headlights, so much a design feature of the SM, have been beautifully detailed, even the transverse panel has been powder coated in the correct colour.
The windscreen is new and the remainder of the glass is without fault; the wheels have been blasted and repainted and the wheel trims detailed and polished.
Our car has a recent engine overhaul with new chains, stainless valve upgrade together with new head gaskets. The gearbox has perfect synchros, oil cooler hoses are recent, the exhaust is stainless, electronic ignition is fitted and the tyres correct new Michelin XWX; there has been much additional maintenance and servicing including work on brakes, hydraulic and cooling systems and the car now runs Evans coolant; works have been performed by marque specialists including Brodie Engineering and CMS Citroen.
The impressive under bonnet view is very clean and our car has a continuous MOT history and simply put anything that has needed doing has been done, with around £10,000 of recent mechanical bills on file. It goes without saying the car drives exceptionally.
A major feature of this car is the superb unrestored interior. This is the quality we all want but is so rare to find on this model. The black leather upholstery is supple and without any tears or loose stitching; the carpets show very little wear, the headlining is perfect and the dashboard uncracked, steering wheel unworn, all gauges functioning; a period looking flush fit modern radio is fitted.
In excellent condition with spare, full toolkit and original matting throughout.
SMs of this quality very rarely come to market, so if you’re looking for the best, this is it. Supplied with original keys, a good file of recent invoices and a tailored indoor car cover.
This is a consignment car and we are facilitating the sale on behalf of the owner.
