History of this car
Faster than a Bora and the size of a Ford Escort, the pleasingly understated Karif was Maserati’s supercar offering of the late 1980s. With a claimed 285bhp and 0-60 time of 4. 8 seconds, the Karif is one of the all time great Q cars with Ferrari GTB and Porsche Turbo crushing performance.
At a UK price of £44, 800 (inflation adjusted, in today’s money that’s £105, 000!), it was very exclusive and only 25 were imported out of a total run of 221 made, with just 7 being road licensed currently.
According to Maserati our example was manufactured in April 1989, finished in Nero with a grey trim. The car was shipped on 27/ 4/ 1989 to Maserati UK Ltd, and first registered here on 9/ 6/ 1989; it is thought this is the last remaining one supplied in black and benefits from being the pure original shape unadorned with any after market body kit.
Our Karif is supplied with a full history from new, with a stamped service book and latterly a stack of invoices showing care and attention lavished on this special Maserati. Subject to an insurance claim in 1991 (unknown incident) during the 1990s the Karif also spent some time in Spain before being acquired by the current owner in 2012, who has continued to keep the Karif in top order with over £35, 000 invested in maintenance and repairs, £20, 000 of which was in 2019 for a mechanical and body sort out at McGrath’s.
The recorded mileage of 50, 000 is warranted as genuine by the owner. Driven to us by the owner in a 450 mile trouble free journey is the proof of the pudding this is a good car!
The car comes with a package of “unobtanium” NOS and used trim parts that have been accumulated by the owner.
The body on this Karif presents strongly with good panel fitment, the doors shutting with the lightest of touches. Partially repainted by McGrath’s in 2019 to rectify some screen channel corrosion issues, the Nero paintwork has a deep gloss and even finish, with only a few very minor imperfections from road use.
The Karif uses the 2. 8 litre Biturbo power plant, the biggest in the range. Unlike the same engine fitted to the 228 or 430 models, when CAR magazine tested the Karif when new they reported a higher compression ratio, bigger turbos and different cam profiles, enabling a power boost to 285bhp from 250, with a shorter final drive and additionally fitted with the special “Meccanica Attiva” suspension system.
Fully cam belt serviced by McGrath’s in 2019, at the same time interventions were made to the cooling, air conditioning, exhaust, steering, transmission, braking and electrical systems with 1000 miles covered since.
Diligent maintenance shows in the way this car drives, and on test this Karif drove tightly with turbine smoothness, a responsive and very fast car with a slick dog leg gear box, nicely weighted power steering and generally well resolved performance; it’s also a notably easy car to drive with excellent visibility.
The engine bay looks a picture with fresh red crackle finished casings and much evidence of careful maintenance; a stainless steel sports exhaust is also fitted.
What a nice place to be. This Karif’s interior is simply gorgeous with a luxurious blend of wood, leather and Alcantara.
Offered in generally excellent condition, the interior of our car has been partially retrimmed using original materials, most recently with a replacement headlining having been fitted in 2019. All electrical items function, apart from the clock.
The luggage compartment – generously sized for this type of car – is in unmarked condition and complete with factory toolkit.
This most rare example of a classic Maserati is ready for shows, events or simple enjoyment as the great sports car it was intended to be. Our Karif is supplied with two sets of keys, owner’s pouch with manual, warranty book and dealer directory, parts and workshop manuals, original sales brochure and road test reports, a tailored indoor car cover, history file and parts package.
An exclusive Karif in the best colour scheme, it must surely be amongst the very best examples out there and is priced competitively for an early sale.
