1969 ALFA ROMEO GT JUNIOR 1300

A superb low ownership LHD step front in a sought after colour combo with £30k+ of fresh work.

History of this car

According to the DVLA stamped authorised copy of the Italian logbook on file, this stylish Alfa Romeo was first registered in Trento on 24.02.1969 to an owner who would keep the car until 1998 selling to well known dealer Auto-Speak who in turn sold it to specialist UK dealer John Williams who imported the car from Italy to the UK in 2001. It was then sold to the only UK owner.

This is therefore a genuine two long term owner car, finished in one of the most desirable colour combinations for this model, Verde Pino over a tobacco interior (the original colour scheme).

In addition this scalino is fitted with its matching, correct type 530 GT Junior engine and is equipped with the rare and coveted Dellorto carburettors.

Our car is ASI registered and comes with its plaque and passport, plus pictures of the car when imported. Recorded mileage is 75000 klms which isn’t guaranteed but judging by the usual wear points, could well be genuine.

The Alfa was used in the UK before going into a period of storage in 2008
emerging in 2019 to enter a recommissioning and restoration programme with bills totalling over £30,000.

This included extensive works to the body and mechanicals, as detailed below.

Bodywork

This Bertone has an excellent chassis and body. Specialist restorer Quest carried out a photo documented and receipted body restoration and partial repaint in 2020, including removing the engine and gearbox and all engine bay ancillaries.

Body repairs included:

Wing repair sections, inner and outer
3 part sill sections
Jacking points
A post
Floors
Chassis legs
Radiator cross member
Front valance
New fuel tank

Prospective buyers are encouraged to look at the door/sill panel fitment, spot-on and tricky to achieve in restoration.

The bright work is generally excellent, the bumpers being particularly nice. All body glass is a feature being original and without damage and in beautiful condition, as are the lenses.

The chassis, as you can see from the photos, is really sharply presented.

Mechanics

Whilst the engine and gearbox were removed for the body renovation, an extensive mechanical overhaul was conducted in 2020, involving:

Engine: strip and clean/inspect all parts fit new crank oil seal and gaskets, cylinder head overhauled with new valves, ignition overhaul, all new belts, water pump overhaul with new hoses etc
Front suspension all rebuilt, new shocks, ball joints, bushes, bearings etc
Steering box rebuild
Braking system completely rebuilt with new hydraulics, master cylinder, servo and calipers rebuilt, new brake lines fabricated and installed.
Fit new clutch and all clutch hydraulics, gearbox resealed
Hand brake stripped and overhauled
Propshaft overhauled with new doughnut
New choke and throttle cables
Battery replacement

The car was serviced by specialists in March 2023 seeing an ignition overhaul as well as all new fluids and filters (engine, gearbox and back axle), £1951.00 bill on file.

An 80 hour pre-sale preparation process in our own workshop has included:

Electrical overhaul
Fitment of new splash guards
Carburettor strip and rebuild, ultrasonic cleaning, tuning
Carburettor stay fitment and new bush
New fuel hoses
New exhaust
New stainless wiper arms and blades
Tracking adjustment and alignment set
Timing re-set
Fitment of new GTA style wheels and new Continental radials (original wheels and hubcaps included), topped off with fresh stainless wheel bolts and special bolt-in valve finishers.

Take for and obtain advisory free MOT until August 2024.

On test this car drives and sounds right with a noteworthily eager engine in perfect tune that doesn’t smoke, leak any oil and has factory oil pressure. It goes so well it’s not far off the 1750GTV here. Steering, braking and suspension are superb, as they should be, they’re all new!

The engine room, having been repainted and all ancillaries being refurbished in the restoration process, presents in show condition.

Interior

Our car features a gorgeous tobacco interior with upholstery in excellent condition. This Alfa also has the later and more popular twin binnacle fascia and features an uncracked original dashboard. The floors have new underlay and fresh rubber OE type matting and the sun visors are new.

Boot

Correct rubber matting throughout; new boot seal.

Summary

A gem of a car. This example generates a lot of positive attention on the road and we don’t expect it to be here for long. Low ownership Bertone step fronts of this quality rarely come to market, benefitting from significant new investment as this one does.

Supplied with excellent history file, two sets of wheels and tyres.
